What is Story?
It is the outpouring of the human heart. It is our secrets, fears, longings, misconceptions, the triumph of our victories, and elegy of defeats. It is the legends of our history and the hope for our future.
What does story need?
For stories to work, they need a protagonist with a goal, longing, or desire to actively pursue. Internal and external forces hamper the protagonist’s progress. Internally, a lie, fear, or wound holds him or her back from achieving that goal, desire, or longing. An external antagonist creates obstacles to the protagonist’s goals. To succeed, the protagonist must face their own demons as the external antagonistic force. The protagonist must choose to give into or forsake the internal antagonist before facing the external antagonist and completing the arc of change.
